Solutions to water quality problems in urban areas are many, but there are a few main solutions:
- Low Impact Development – A set of development techniques that tries to make the water falling on the land and flowing through the land act more like it would in a natural setting.
- Preserving and protecting existing natural areas – No matter what development technique we use, nothing is better than Mother Nature. To the extent possible, the most effective strategy is to identify and protect our remaining natural areas.
- Good behavior – What we all do has an effect on the environment. Whether we choose to use lawn chemicals or not, pick up our pet waste, keep our farm animals out of creeks, fix our leaky cars, wash our cars in areas where it won’t drain to a stream (i.e. on a lawn or at a car wash), all these things are in our power to help water quality.
